Daniel Luttick...biggest Virgil copy cat ever?

Hello fellow HODers.

I have come to know this forum as the most critical when it comes to drummers and drumming in general. Which is a good thing!

I am not sure if many here have seen this video, but recently it has been under some critical argument over on the Virgil forums.

The man is Daniel Luttick.

Now, I have seen some copycats before, and there is nothing wrong with being inspired by your favorite drummer, hell Steve Holmes is OBVIOUSLY inspired heavily by Vinnie, but he has his own voice. This guy Daniel, not only looks like Virgil, but is an EXACT clone of him in his playing, the way he looks, the way he looks WHILE he is playing.

In my opinion it is pretty sad when you have to resort to being an EXACT copy cat of someone without having anything to make yourself seem like an individiual.

Yep, that was pretty uninspired. I lost interest and found I went from active listening to quite passive within a quarter way through. I dunno... that kind of blistering fast all out playing doesn't say anything to me.

The guy definitely has absorbed his drum hero. Still, it takes a lot to pull that stuff off.

It is a waste of time to copy someone to that degree and not do it nearly as well, he falls pretty short at times and does certain thing's fairly well even though the performance is VERY repetitive(and I do not fault him for that he is still young and he is trying to cop some VERY difficult stuff) IMO. He is physically very talented. Being heavily influenced by someone is normal of course and a person cannot be faulted for that. But It does not matter whether it is Virg or Porcaro or Vinnie, you got to try and mold your influences into your identity and obviously that takes time. I have seen other's try and cop Vinnie, Dave, Dennis etc. to the point that it is embarrassing because they are TRYING to play JUST like their inspiration and do not do it nearly as well, why would someone want to watch 2nd or 3rd rate when the original is still going strong. I do not want to watch or hear someone try and play JUST like another whether they are going for Bernard Purdie or Buddy Rich. But even some of the Great player's today sounded to much like their Major influnces awhile back. First time I heard Jo-Jo I thought wow it sound's alot like Dave W. and even though impressed he could play nearly as well I was turned off abit.

I actually could only watch it today while i am at work, no sound... but ho-lee crap... that dude look JUST LIKE Virgil!!! He even has the old Premier set with with BD head crooked, like how Virg did when was with them. The facial expressions too... haha!

I guess i need to listen from a computer where we have sound so i can see what this cat is pulling off... he LOOKS fast...

Well, his solo goes nowhere just like some of Virg's solos I've seen.

That is creepy. Maybe Neil is right to want to stay away from his fans. This guy is bizarre.

Neil did sell a lot of vibrafibing. Virg needs to find something to sell to guy like this...maybe coat his shells with carbon fiber or something really expensive...

wow, I laughed out loud when I saw this.

Well, when we started to learn how to play, we all did this to some degree, maybe not this far...(he even had the goatee thing! lol )

If he wants to be an amateur, he can get away with this for a while, if he wants to be a pro, he'll grow out of this and want to find his own voice.

This guy may make a major impact someday once he gets through his impersonation phase. Seeing this reminds me of a few drummers from the past that went through a similar style absorption. People like - Simon Phillips to Billy Cobham, Cindy Blackman to Tony Williams, Weckl to Gadd, Larry Bright to Chambers, Portnoy to Peart, not to mention all the drummers that wanted to be Buddy Rich and Ringo Starr...
